The Wonca Working Party on Women and Family Medicine is pleased to announce the following bursary and travel equalization subsidy awards.

The following is a summary of the announcements and the outcomes:

1.  Announcement #1:  This announcement was for 4 bursaries for ‘young/new’ women family physicians from *four* regions of Wonca: Asia Pacific, MESAR, Africa, and Iberoamerica.  Applications were received from 8 applicants, 7 from Asia Pacific and one from Europe.  All 8 applications were deemed worthy of funding by the committee.  Each bursary awarded was worth $500-1000. Funds were awarded to:

  • Dr. Susanna Onanyan (Armenia)
  • Dr. Pham Thi Ngoc Bich (Vietnam )
  • Dr. Aileen Espina (Philippines)
  • Dr. Mari Guerzon-Joson (Philippines)
  • Dr. Oryzati Hilman-Agrimon (Indonesia)
  • Dr. Teri-Marie Laude (Philippines)
  • Dr. Indah S. Widyahening (Indonesia)
  • Dr. Thuy Thi Ngoc Thai (Vietnam)

 2.  Announcement #2:  This was for 4-8 bursaries for all women family physicians, from *all* regions of Wonca.   There were three applications for this announcement.  All three were from Africa.  All were deemed worthy of support.  Each applicant received $500. Funds were awarded to:

  • Dr. Anne D. Atai-Omoruto (Uganda)
  • Dr. Kate Anteyi (Nigeria)
  • Dr. Edith Okoi (Nigeria)

 3.  Announcement #3:  This was for a Travel Equalization Subsidy.  Donations of $1800 were received from Wonca members.  There were three applications for this award.  All were deemed worthy.  Each applicant received $250 towards travel equalization.  Funds were awarded to:

  • Dr. Anne D. Atai-Omoruto (Uganda)
  • Dr. Kate Anteyi (Nigeria)
  • Dr. Edith Okoi (Nigeria)

 4. Additional funds awarded for merit and need

  • Dr. Anne D. Atai-Omoruto (Uganda)
We used the following general criteria to allocate the funds $4000 among new physicians; $2000 among other family physicians; $1800 from donations for travel equalization).
  • In each member category, we wanted to give funds to each region from which applications had been submitted.
  • Since not all regions were represented, we allocated the funds to the members from the regions applying.
  • Within each region we tried to split the funds equally unless applicants had other means of support.
  • We tried to be fair to all and hoped to use the money to the best of our abilities.
  • We made the process as open and transparent as possible.
  • We distributed additional funds on the basis of merit and need

In the future we hope to expand the acquisition of bursary funds and the fundraising to enable increasing numbers of young physicians to become active in WWPWFM and in Wonca and to offer it earlier in the process.

The WWPWFM has committed itself to advising Wonca on how to bring gender equity to the organization through a variety of mechanisms. This initiative of bursary support is an important one which will enable more women to attend the Wonca World Conference.

Hearty congratulations to those receiving bursaries.  We look forward to seeing you at Wonca in Singapore.
